What is cupping?

Cupping is an ancient healing practice that is often used in conjunction with acupuncture to treat chronic pain issues and promote overall well-being. Cupping dates back to ancient Egyptian, Chinese, and Middle Eastern cultures. One of the oldest medical textbooks in the world, the Ebers Papyrus, describes how in 1,550 B.C. the ancient Egyptians used cupping therapy.

Cupping creates a vacuum on the skin surface that localizes the expansion of the muscle or connective tissue below, increasing blood and energy flow to the constricted area. Increased circulation improves oxygen supply and cellular metabolism which reduces inflammatory substances and toxins. Here at Acupuncture Atlanta our providers use pump vacuums with optional bio magnetic therapy, silicon cups, and/or fire cupping with glass cups. We also offer wet cupping when needed, which involves a tiny incision to draw out blood during the procedure. Cupping services are available separately, or may be combined with a private Acupuncture session.

Cupping does leave temporary circular marks that fade over time and disappear after a few days, deeper cupping marks may last over a week.
